“I’m immediately withdrawing from the unfair, [one-sided] Paris Climate Accord rip-off. The United States will not sabotage their own industries, while China pollutes with impunity,” Trump said.
At the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., Trump signed several executive orders, one of which was the U.S. withdrawal from the United Nations’s Paris Climate Agreement.
Trump pulled the U.S. from the agreement in his first term in 2020, but it took years to finalize. Former President Joe Biden rejoined the deal shortly after.
The international climate agreement that started in 2015 aims to set a goal of limiting global heating to below 2 degrees Celcius above preindustrial levels.
Trump signed a letter notifying the United Nations of the U.S. departure from the treaty.
“In recent years, the United States has purported to join international agreements and initiatives that do not reflect our country’s values or our contributions to the pursuit of economic and environmental objectives,” the executive order reads.
“Moreover, these agreements steer American taxpayer dollars to countries that do not require or merit financial assistance in the interests of the American people.”
