While no large-scale petrochemical refinery has been built stateside in decades — a factor
driven by cost and bureaucratic red tape from the federal government — U.S. refining capacity has slowly increased as expansions are made to existing facilities. ExxonMobil’s $2 billion
addition to its Beaumont refinery, which increased capacity by 250,000 barrels per day, began operations in the first quarter of this year.
