Evergreen has pocketed a stunning $30m from the sale of the 1996-built, 5,364 teu Ever United with the ship set to deliver charter-free later this month.

“A remarkable sale and a historically high level demonstrate that the continued lack of tonnage on the charter market in larger (and smaller segments) is driving a surge in secondhand pricing,” broker Braemar noted in a container markets update today.

The buyer of the Mitsubishi Heavy-built vessel has yet to be revealed but its sale helps explain why ship recyclers are struggling with secondhand prices for vintage tonnage so strong across the board.

In the year to date, 235 ships of 7.4m dwt have been reported sold, 20% below the run-rate of 2022-23 in dwt, according to the latest data from Clarksons Research. Bulk carrier demolition is down 37% on last year’s total and containerships are down 47%.
